Quick answers

First Aid questions

Short answers for supervisors and safety leads.

Does OSHA require a trained first aid provider on site?

If there is no infirmary, clinic or hospital in near proximity to the workplace, a person adequately trained to render first aid must be available, along with adequate first aid supplies (29 CFR 1910.151(b)). OSHA has interpreted near proximity as no more than 3 to 4 minutes where serious injuries are possible, and up to 15 minutes in low-hazard workplaces such as offices.

When is an eyewash station required?

Where a worker’s eyes or body may be exposed to injurious corrosive materials, suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing must be provided within the work area for immediate emergency use (29 CFR 1910.151(c)).

Does the bloodborne pathogens standard apply to first aid providers?

Yes. Employees expected to give first aid have occupational exposure and are covered by 29 CFR 1910.1030, which requires training, protective equipment and a hepatitis B vaccine offer. Workers who give first aid regularly must be offered the vaccine within 10 working days of assignment. Where first aid is only an occasional, collateral duty, OSHA allows the vaccine to be offered within 24 hours of any incident involving blood instead.
