Quick answers

Ergonomics questions

Short answers for supervisors and safety leads.

Is there an OSHA ergonomics standard?

No. OSHA does not have a specific ergonomics standard, but it can cite employers for ergonomic hazards under the General Duty Clause, Section 5(a)(1) of the OSH Act.

What is a safe weight to lift?

There is no single safe limit. The NIOSH lifting equation sets a recommended weight limit of 51 pounds for a two-handed lift under ideal conditions. The limit drops when lifts are more frequent, farther from the body, twisted, start low or end high, travel a long distance, or the load is hard to grip.

What are musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs)?

MSDs are injuries to muscles, tendons, nerves and joints, such as back strains, tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. They are often caused by repetitive motion, awkward postures, forceful exertions and heavy lifting.
