April 28, 2016 marked Workers’ Memorial Day. In the United States, about 150 people die every day due to hazardous working conditions.
According to data, 4,821 workers were killed on the job in 2014 while approximately 50,000 people died due to occupational related diseases.
Communication is a recurring theme in our blogs. Workers don’t feel comfortable reporting unsafe conditions. Safety committees are ineffective if they exist at all. Tool Box Talks often don’t occur.
When a supervisor chooses productivity over safety, the lives of the employees and their families can be forever altered. However, the price for medical expenses, increased premium and workers’ compensation costs can have a major impact on the company’s bottom line.
Safety vs. Productivity? Supervisors need to ask themselves: Is one more widget more important than the lives of the people employed here and the families that will be affected by their injury…or death?
Every day, Three Sixty Safety (TSS) trains supervisors on how to effectively communicate with employees. TSS runs or helps organizations run safety committee meetings. Tool Box Talks are delivered promptly. Every effort is made to teach and practice effective communication.
