Dropped objects have been a problem as long as gravity has existed. For all objects, including humans, the focus should be on preventing things from falling rather than attempting to catch them or clean up the damage once they’ve fallen.
Fallen objects cause workers to be the victims of accidents. A few tips to help prevent fallen object injuries:
Expand fall protection programs to include tools and equipment
Require risk assessments before performing work with drop hazards
Consider using energy absorbing lanyards, which will reduce the force associated with the tool.
As best practice, workers at height should only bring up tools they need to perform the job.
