“In an effort to keep “Safety” at the forefront of our community, Three Sixty Safety is working to provide examples of real events and how they are impacting manufacturers.”

What was the cause of these fines?

-During an inspection, OSHA cited this manufacturer for fall, machine and electrical hazards.  The specifics of the fines stated that this organization “exposed its employees to crush injuries, burns, and fall hazards while they conducted maintenance on plastic injection molding presses. Inspectors cited the employer for failing to ensure employees had adequate personal protective equipment and clothing, and for permitting the use of damaged electrical devices.”

How could we have avoided a fine like this?

-With compliance rules and regulations always changing, it is a good practice to have a Mock OSHA Audit of your facility every year.  In an audit, you can better understand where you are and are not in compliance with your equipment and processes in your facility.  This will help you understand your exposures better and quickly fix them before a serious injury occurs.  Other areas addressed in this fine were the use of inadequate personal protective equipment(PPE) and using damaged electrical devices.  An equipment (electrical or PPE) should always be assessed routinely to ensure acceptable use.  If a person’s protective gloves are worn out from the job they perform, it is the job of the employer to make sure they get new ones to perform their job safely.

How large of a fine is this organization facing.

-In this scenario, the organization is facing a fine of $261,454.  This does not include any dollars that they will have to spend to remediate their violations.

How can Three Sixty Safety help?

-The Three Sixty Safety helps many manufacturers get an idea of where they currently stand from a compliance perspective with our Mock OSHA Audit.  An audit usually includes employee interviews, a review of your program’s policies and procedures, and an audit of the facility floor.  Upon completion of the audit, we will produce the findings with a counter-measure sheet.  We can also help you remediate those issues to ensure those areas the need change are completed in the right manner.
